Reading British crime novels....here's my TBR stack!

You know, I think I've been very clear that I love all things dark and mysterious.  I love crime novels of all types, but my true favorites are likely those set somewhere in the British Isles.  I love rainy, cool, damp settings.  I love the Victorian Age and the Jack the Ripper era.  However, I also love stories with a current day England, Scotland, or Ireland setting.  Those books really speak to me and I suspect that if you checked my genetic background, I'd be from that part of the world.  My freckles and fair skin would certainly suggest that.  This year has been a particularly good year for me in my British crime novel reading.

I'm indebted to other bloggers for bringing all these books to my attention.  If you see one in the following pictures that you've reviewed, well, I probably got the idea from you.  Sorry, I didn't keep track.  Over the last few months, I've gradually acquired all these lovely books in various ways, and I can't wait to read them.  And share my reactions.

Black Chalk - Christopher J. Yates
Flight - Isabel Ashdown
Remember Me This Way - Sabine Durrant
The Crooked House - Christobel Kent
The Good Girl - Fiona Neill
All The Little Pieces - Jilliane Hoffman

Touched - Joanna Briscoe
Hidden - Emma Kavanagh
You Belong To Me - Samantha Hayes
I Let You Go - Clare Mackintosh
What She Left - T.R. Richmond

Black Wood - Sji Holliday
Falling - Emma Kavanagh
When We Were Friends - Tina Seskis
Unravelling Oliver - Liz Nugent
Can Anybody Help Me? - Sinead Crowley
The Lie - C.L. Taylor
How I Lost You - Jenny Blackhurst

Have you read any of these?  Do you have an opinion about where I should begin?  Please feel free to make suggestions.

    1. I'll move that one up the list and, yes, it does sound 'good'. LOL

  2. Freckles and fair skin might indicate Scottish ancestory like mine, Kay. The old Viking thing... my grandfather was a red-headed Scot. :-)

I'm a bit stunned that I haven't read any of those authors and only heard of of a couple. Hope they're all good.

    1. Before I became so gray on the temple area, I had a red streak sort of underneath and reddish highlights naturally. And lots and lots of freckles. I figure Scottish or Irish.

    1. Thanks, Kathy. A lot of these would qualify as psychological thriller - the flavor of the moment, right?

  5. I haven't read very much British lately and I miss it! Several of these are new to me and then there are several that are on my TBR. I may need to go on a Brit reading spree though I've realized when I'm reading primarily British crime books my wording changes a little and I start using the word "bloody" a lot!

  9. Unsurprisingly I've read lots of these as I really enjoy British crime. My favourite out of your stack is Unravelling Oliver which was one of my top 10 of last year. This book has one of the most shocking opening lines ever! I also highly recommend I Let You Go by Claire Mackintosh. All in all you have a wonderful stack of books and I suspect you will enjoy them all.

  13. I have this desire to read more crime thrillers and mysteries. In fact, they are what I grew up with. But nowadays I haven't read much.

    1. I think we all go through cycles - a little of this and then a little of that. You'll get back to mysteries at some point probably.

  16. Dang it, these all sound good! I should have known not to visit your blog if I didn't want to add huge amounts of books to my mile-long GoodReads TBR list :)

Have you read AT THE WATER'S EDGE by Sara Gruen? I'm enjoying it. It's not a mystery novel, but it's an atmospheric drama/adventure set in Scotland during WWII. I have an affinity for this area of the world as well -- my ancestors were British/Scotch/Irish.

    1. I have not read At The Water's Edge. It's the Loch Ness one right? It's on my list, but thank you for reminding me. :-)

    2. Yes, it's the Loch Ness one, but it's more about a spoiled debutante's awakening to the world and herself. It's a good historical novel -- a little depressing, but ultimately hopeful. I enjoyed it.

  18. That should keep you busy for a while! Do you notice a difference in the style of the British writers or is it more a matter or the settings and language?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I think there is some difference in style in some of them. And, of course, there are the language differences - different terms for items. I've watched so much British crime shows though, I don't seem to have too much difficulty.

  19. I can't believe it but I haven't heard of one of these authors! I did read some Michael Gilbert in the past few months, though, he isn't new (or even alive). :<)
